The Alice Band

The Alice Band: Charity, Audrey and Amy. Three voices, three guitars, and some of the most achingly beautiful, country-wired pop songs you will ever hear.

With Shaun Colvin, Joni Mitchell and The Cowboy Junkies as touchstones, the Alice Band grew from a shared belief in the good old-fashioned values of musicianship and melody. Their timeless and unashamedly mainstream fusion of country, folk and crystalline pop is set to provide a much needed breath of fresh air in a scene increasingly dominated by identi-kit bands and copycat signings.

The Alice Band’s story is one of serendipitous meetings, shared visions and the determination to succeed in the face of adversity.  Formed in the summer of ’99, the band’s founder members were Charity Hair and Amy Lindop  – two singers united by kismet from different corners of the globe.

Growing up in Plant City, Florida, Charity (22) was surrounded by music from an early age, As a child her uncle taught her to play the fiddle and by her teenage years she had graduated to the guitar. Charity relocated to London at the age of eighteen and gained work in a myriad of odd jobs as she pursued her dream of gaining a recording career.

Nineteen year old Amy Lindop (a great, great descendant of Abraham Lincoln), grew up in Scotland and left school at the age of sixteen. Shortly afterwards she proceeded to tour the country with her guitar, busking original compositions to AliceBand2pay her way.  A self-taught musician, Amy relocated to London in the late nineties and proceeded to send her home-made demo tapes to anyone who would listen.

Charity met Amy at Instant Karma/Dharma. Both had been invited for meetings at the label’s Piccadilly offices and it soon became evident that the two shared uncannily similar musical reference points – both were guitarists with varying takes on folk and country tinged pop.

A few days later Charity and Amy played their first gig together at London’s 12 Bar Club in Soho. Their short, acoustic set of originals and old favourites was warmly received and encouraged the fledgling band to develop their sound.

A few months passed and while the songs were flowing, both Charity and Amy felt that an extra vocalist would further add depth to their sound.  A friend ofAliceBand4 Amy’s suggested they look up Audrey Nugent, – a singer for an indie band in Ireland. A meeting was succeeded by numerous phonecalls and Audrey was invited to join the band.

Two became three and they decided to call themselves The Alice Band – a tongue in cheek reference to a hair appendage doubled with the universal meaning of the girl’s name, Alice. With all three members sharing vocal duties and contributing to the writing and song selection process the band spent the rest of the summer honing their sound.

AliceBand3The debut album recorded in Canada and London showcases a stunning repertoire, from the vivacious sparkle of ‘Nothing On But The Radio’ to the redemptive, blues addled pop of ‘Tambourine Song’, the Alice Band’s hook laden tunes and soaring harmonies underscore a remarkably assured debut. The album now features three bonus tracks including the hit single Don’t Fear The Reaper.
